What We Do

Through our Legal Services, HJI aims to improve healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for low-income households, particularly people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and people with disabilities.

Legal Advocacy

HJI provides legal support to improve healthcare access and outcomes for low-income households, particularly people of color, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, immigrants, and people with disabilities. Our work addresses systemic barriers and empowers patients to claim their healthcare rights.

Community Engagement

We offer educational workshops, multilingual guides, and volunteer training to help communities navigate healthcare challenges. HJI partners with local organizations and events to raise awareness and promote equitable access to care.

Policy Advocacy

HJI advocates for policies that remove barriers to care through research, community assessments, and strategic action plans. We aim to expand our advocacy from Brooklyn to all NYC boroughs and ultimately New York State.

Health Care Council

Our Health Care Council, made up of community members and local stakeholders, informs the design and delivery of culturally appropriate services. The council helps guide long-term planning, ensuring programs reflect community needs and values.

Training Overview

At Health Justice Initiative, we believe that advancing equity in health care requires more than good intentions. It requires practical knowledge, legal tools, and community-driven education.

We offer health law training for community members, health workers, legal professionals, and partner organizations who want to better understand the legal barriers that impact health outcomes in historically underserved communities.

Our trainings are designed to:

  • Alleviating health-related legal barriers, including Medicaid access, immigrant health rights, and hospital billing practices
  • Equip individuals with knowledge and tools to advocate for themselves and their communities
  • Support community members in identifying legal issues that impact themselves and their families
  • Foster collaboration between health and legal professionals to drive systems change

We offer both standard training and customized workshops tailored to the needs of community-based organizations, mutual aid networks, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups.

Whether you’re a case manager, organizer, clinician, or community member, our training provides practical strategies for using the law as a tool for health equity.
