HJI plans to develop and implement educational workshops on healthcare rights; create and disseminate multilingual healthcare rights guides and legal resources explaining common healthcare barriers; attend or speak at health events; and initiate projects with local partners to educate or raise awareness among community members. We plan to offer informational workshops on “Know Your Healthcare Rights,” as well as workshops specifically on immigrant and LGBTQ+ healthcare rights and access. We also plan to develop a training program to prepare community members as volunteer health advocates to assist with non-legal support services.
Health Care Council
To ensure that the communities served will be involved in the project design, implementation, and evaluation, HJI will develop a health care council during the pilot period. This council will be comprised of at least six members, such as community residents and representatives from local health care providers, faith-based organizations, law firms, and community-based organizations. The council will help create and deliver a comprehensive needs assessment in order to better understand the needs, resources, cultural values, and preferences of the target communities. We will use the assessment to inform the development and fine-tuning of an effective, culturally appropriate model for service delivery, community empowerment, and advocacy.
In the long term, the local council will continue to meet at regularly established intervals and communicate with the HJI board and staff in order to inform the strategic implementation and growth of the organization, as well as the justice in health movement in Brooklyn and beyond.
